Reading the book would have done nothing basically. Not entirely sure what causes this quest to glitch but it seems that if you find a shard or read the book soon after you leave Helgen the quest will be doable. Have you checked out the uesp entry for Lost to the Aged. Just google Lost to the Ages at uesp and you will get a link for it.
