They just look more practical than most of the other types, while still looking more exotic than iron or steel. Dwenmer gear is the best looking for me. It's ancient and has some mysticism. This is what I’m using, with an absorb health enchantment and upgraded to legendary.
For Heavy, I think Nordic Carved and Dwarven form the most appealing matching sets, shield included. The Nordic is bad ass looking, and the Dwarven looks simply impenetrable. If we're not worried about matching armor type and looking at the shields by themselves I'm a big fan of Dragonplate and plain old Iron. 2.

Armor of the old gods seems to be what your looking for. The forsworn armor was the first thing that came to mind. Check out the Falmer armor sets, they look really cool. Bonemold, Dragonbone and Daedric (or a mashup of those) might look good too. If you have Saints and Seducers, I’d suggest Amber Armor.
